‘They Don’t Care About Us’, Chelsea Fans Pick On Owners As Crisis Deepens

Chelsea’s difficult season has entered a new phase, with supporters openly directing their frustration at the club’s ownership following a run of poor results and growing uncertainty over the team’s direction.

“We don’t care about Clearlake; they don’t care about us.”

The chant has become a constant at Stamford Bridge, reflecting the mood among Chelsea fans on owners as tensions rise around BlueCo, the ownership group led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

The situation worsened after a 3-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, a result that ended any realistic chance of finishing in the top five and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

With three games left, Chelsea sit ninth, far from their pre-season target, as pressure continues to build on and off the pitch.

Ownership Under Pressure
The criticism extends beyond results. Chelsea’s latest financial accounts showed a £262m pre-tax loss, while UEFA continues to monitor the club under financial regulations. For many supporters, these figures reflect a wider concern about strategy both on and off the pitch.

Fan group Not A Project CFC has emerged as a voice of protest, calling for change and planning demonstrations. One protest is scheduled before the FA Cup final against Manchester City, while another urges supporters to turn their backs during a home game against Tottenham Hotspur.

Inside the club, efforts have been made to calm tensions. Director Danny Finkelstein reportedly told fans it was “obvious” the team was being built for long-term success, but such assurances have not eased concerns.

Disconnect On And Off Pitch
The divide between supporters and the club has widened in recent months. Coaching changes have played a role, with Liam Rosenior becoming the latest departure, leaving Chelsea searching for a sixth permanent manager in four years.

Earlier, Mauricio Pochettino said he left because the club did not match his “vision”, pointing to a focus on data over “emotion”.

His successor, Enzo Maresca, delivered silverware but failed to connect with supporters before his exit fully.

On the pitch, inconsistency has raised further questions. Off it, the recruitment strategy and contract structures have drawn criticism.

Former England striker, Wayne Rooney, said on BBC Sport, “A nine-year contract – it’s absolutely crazy, you don’t want to sign a contract like that.

“Maybe financially if you want security, but you don’t want to tie yourself in for that long. It’s absolute madness.”

Players and fans drifting apart
Supporters have also voiced concerns about a lack of connection with players. Long-term deals and frequent squad turnover have made it difficult to build relationships, in contrast to previous eras.

In the CFCUK fanzine, editor Dave Johnstone said: “Any rapport between the players and the supporters… to my mind at least, is at an all-time low.

“Ask any supporter of a certain age, and they will tell you that, from the late 1960s, every player picked for the Chelsea team got their name chanted during the warm-up, and they, in turn, responded with an acknowledgement.

“These days though, and much to their detriment, the current crop of players appear wholly detached from the people in the stands.”

Managers Under BlueCo
Since the takeover led by BlueCo in 2022, Chelsea FC have struggled to find stability on the touchline, cycling through multiple managers in a short period.

The first major decision by the new owners was the dismissal of Thomas Tuchel in September 2022, despite his success in delivering the UEFA Champions League title just over a year earlier. His exit set the tone for a period of frequent changes.

Tuchel was replaced by Graham Potter, who arrived from Brighton with a reputation for progressive football. However, results failed to match expectations, and he was sacked in April 2023 after a run of poor performances.

Following Potter’s exit, club legend Frank Lampard returned on an interim basis to steady the team until the end of the 2022-23 season. His short stint yielded limited improvement as Chelsea finished outside European places.

Ahead of the 2023-24 season, Mauricio Pochettino was appointed on a long-term deal. He guided the team to a domestic cup final and improved performances late in the season but left after just one campaign, citing differences over direction.

His successor, Enzo Maresca, initially aligned with the club’s data-driven approach. Despite winning the Conference League and Club World Cup and securing Champions League qualification, he departed following disagreements over transfers, salary, and internal structure.

Most recently, Liam Rosenior was appointed with a focus on rebuilding culture and reconnecting with supporters. However, he lost the dressing room within months and was dismissed, leaving the club once again searching for a permanent solution.

This sequence means Chelsea are now preparing to appoint their sixth permanent manager in four years, underlining the instability that has shaped the current crisis.

Way Forward
The club has acknowledged the need for change. In a statement after Rosenior’s departure, Chelsea said, “As the club works to bring stability to the head coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment.”

Co-owner Behdad Eghbali has also admitted there is a need to “tweak the plan if it’s not working”, while noting that previous decisions, including the dismissal of Thomas Tuchel, “didn’t work out”.

Chelsea are now assessing options for a new manager, with names such as Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva and Xabi Alonso linked to the role.

Despite the turmoil, the club remains in contention for silverware with an FA Cup final to play.

However, the bigger challenge lies beyond one match.

Chelsea’s model has delivered investment and squad depth, but results and stability have not followed. Until performances improve and trust is rebuilt, the pressure on BlueCo is unlikely to ease.
