NAUS Osun Condemns Tragic Death Of Osunlakin Grace, Demands Improved Student Welfare At UNIOSUN Ifetedo Campus

It is with profound sorrow and deep concern that the National Association of University Students (NAUS), Osun State Chapter, addresses the tragic death of Miss Osunlakin Grace, a 400-Level Criminology and Security Studies student of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Ifetedo Campus.

According to information gathered, Grace had successfully defended her final-year project just two days before her untimely passing.

Her death has once again exposed the persistent challenges confronting students at the Ifetedo Campus, particularly the alarming inadequacies of healthcare services and critical welfare infrastructure.

Reports from students indicate that the campus clinic lacks the capacity to adequately respond to medical emergencies, with shortages of essential drugs, medical supplies, and equipment.

Students have alleged that in many cases, patients are instructed to purchase prescribed medications and injections from external pharmacies before returning to the clinic for administration. Such circumstances raise serious concerns about the preparedness of the institution’s healthcare system to safeguard the lives of students.

The tragic loss of Osunlakin Grace is not an isolated incident. Students have recalled previous cases in which lives were allegedly lost under circumstances linked to the inadequacy of available medical facilities. These recurring occurrences have heightened fears among students and strengthened calls for urgent intervention by the university management and relevant government authorities.

Beyond healthcare concerns, students continue to face numerous challenges on the Ifetedo Campus, including poor network connectivity and inadequate infrastructure.

Many students reportedly travel outside the host community, including to neighboring towns and states, to access quality healthcare services that should ordinarily be available within a university environment.

In response to this unfortunate incident, student leaders, departmental representatives, and concerned students have embarked on peaceful protests, demanding the establishment of a standard and fully equipped hospital capable of meeting the healthcare needs of the university community.

They have also called on the university administration and the Osun State Government to ensure equitable development across all UNIOSUN campuses and prioritize the welfare, safety, and well-being of students.

NAUS Osun State Chapter joins students in demanding accountability, transparency, and immediate action. The association believes that no student should lose their life due to preventable shortcomings in healthcare delivery and that every institution owes its students a duty of care.

We therefore call on:
1. The management of Osun State University to immediately investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Miss Osunlakin Grace.

2. The university administration and Osun State Government to establish a standard, fully equipped hospital at the Ifetedo Campus.

3. Relevant authorities to ensure the availability of qualified medical personnel, emergency response facilities, and essential medications at all times.

4. Stakeholders to urgently address infrastructural and welfare challenges affecting students across the campus.

As we mourn the loss of Osunlakin Grace, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and the entire university community.

May her soul rest in peace, and may this painful incident serve as a catalyst for the reforms necessary to protect the lives and welfare of students.
