‘I Was Deceived’: ADC Factional Leader Denies Backing David Mark’s Leadership Takeover

The factional leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nafiu Bala, has alleged that he was tricked into attending the ceremony where the party’s leadership was transitioned to former Senate President David Mark.

Speaking in an interview with AIT News on Monday, Bala distanced himself from the new executive, claiming the event was a “bait-and-switch” orchestrated under false pretences.

Bala, who served as the ADC’s Deputy National Chairman at the time, stated that he was invited to the July 2025 gathering by the former chairman, Ralph Nwosu, on the understanding that it was a routine administrative meeting.

“I was tricked into attending the handing-over ceremony to David Mark. Ralph told me that it was just adoption of new members for the coalition movement,” Bala said.

The situation shifted unexpectedly once the event commenced.

According to Bala, he was blindsided when the agenda moved from coalition building to a complete leadership overhaul.

“But on the same day, Nwosu announced his resignation, and on the same day, he announced David Mark and other excos,” he noted, adding that he had no prior knowledge of the transition and did not consent to the installation of Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as interim National Chairman and Secretary, respectively.

The leadership tussle took a more bureaucratic turn when Bala attempted to assert his authority following the event.

He claimed that upon approaching the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), he was informed that records already indicated his resignation from his post as Deputy National Chairman—a claim he vehemently denies and labels as part of the broader “deception” to clear the path for the new leadership.

Addressing why he did not immediately protest during the ceremony, Bala explained that he chose to consult with other party organs before taking formal action.

“Immediately after one week, we started organising meetings. The remaining NWC and NEC members were consulting across the country before taking any action,” he stated.

Following these internal deliberations, Bala’s faction moved to challenge the legitimacy of the Mark-led executive through formal and legal channels.

“After consultations, I wrote a letter to INEC, as Deputy National Chairman and with the remaining NWC, that I had resumed office as the authentic acting National Chairman of the party,” he said, confirming that the faction has since approached the court to resolve the dispute.
