Residents of Osogbo and its environs, Osun State, have expressed concern after a company that advertised food items at unusually low prices reportedly shut down after collecting advance payments from customers.
The company, identified as “Global Food Initiative,” reportedly began operations at Odi-Olowo, Osogbo, where it distributed flyers advertising discounted prices for food items including rice, cooking oil, spaghetti, semovita and beverages.
The flyers stated that customers would receive their purchased items seven days after payment, explaining that the waiting period was intended to prevent overcrowding and ensure that booked items were available for collection.
The company advertised a 50kg bag of rice for N27,000, five litres of Golden Terra groundnut oil for N8,000, 25 litres of Kings Oil for N30,000 and 10kg of Golden Penny semovita for N8,000, among other items.
Following the circulation of the flyers, residents, including food retailers, reportedly visited the company’s premises and made advance payments for various packages.
Some customers who initially received their orders reportedly encouraged others to patronise the company, leading more residents to make payments for the discounted food items.

On a visit to the company on Monday, several affected customers were reportedly gathered at the premises, expressing frustration over the development.
Although the total amount allegedly collected has not been independently verified, some customers claimed they had paid millions of naira for the food packages.
The operators were reportedly unreachable, while the phone numbers provided by the company were also said to have become inactive, raising concerns among the affected customers.
Security personnel, including police officers reportedly deployed with six trucks, were at the scene to maintain order as some customers expressed their grievances and called for an investigation and recovery of their funds.
