The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Joint Campus Group covering Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has declared a total and indefinite strike across the three institutions.
The union announced the strike in a statement issued on Tuesday, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum it issued to the Lagos State Government on August 31.
According to the union, the ultimatum expired without a satisfactory resolution or a concrete plan from the state government to address its demands.
ASUU said its final warning issued on September 10 had made clear that “silence is no longer an option,” but the government allowed the September 13 deadline to pass without initiating dialogue.
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Joint Campus Group comprising Lagos State University (ASUU-LASU), Lagos State University of Education (ASUU-LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (ASUU-LASUSTECH) hereby declares a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action effective immediately,” the union said.
The union’s major demand is the full domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-Federal Government of Nigeria agreement across all Lagos State-owned universities.
It specifically listed the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and welfare protections for active and retired academic staff among the provisions it wants implemented.
ASUU said it took the decision “with a heavy heart,” acknowledging its potential impact on the academic calendar and the wider university community.
Appealing to students, the union said the dispute was ultimately aimed at protecting the quality and sustainability of their education.
“This fight is fundamentally about preserving the quality and sustainability of your education,” it said.
“A demoralised faculty cannot provide the world-class standard of learning you deserve.”
The union urged students to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding while efforts continued to secure what it described as a permanent resolution.
ASUU also acknowledged the concerns of parents and guardians over possible disruptions to their children’s education.
“We deeply share your anxieties regarding delays in your children’s educational journeys,” it said, adding that the union’s patience had “been tested and toyed with over the last eight months.”
The union appealed to university administrations to understand that the strike was not directed against them.
“This decision is by no means an adversarial action against your office,” ASUU said.
“It is a strategic effort to empower you to superintend over a happy, motivated staff and ensure the smooth running of our universities.”
The union also commended the administrations of the three institutions for their efforts towards the domestication of the agreement.
ASUU called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, alumni associations, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to support its demand.
“We call on traditional institutions, religious leaders, alumni associations, civil society organisations, and all well-meaning Lagosians to see this as a rescue mission for Lagos State education and lend their voices to this call,” it said.
The union said it had exercised restraint and consistently advocated dialogue with the state government.
It, however, blamed the Lagos State Government for the disruption, citing what it described as its continued inaction and failure to implement agreements that had been implemented by neighbouring states.
ASUU also said the strike had the full backing of its national leadership.
According to the union, the national leadership supported the process from the initial letters sent to the university administrations, governing councils and the Visitor through the issuance of the 14-day ultimatum.
The union said ASUU National expected the Lagos State Government to follow the example of other state governors who had acted to resolve similar issues in their universities.
The strike, it said, would remain in force until meaningful engagement produced a satisfactory resolution and the state government signed, domesticated and fully implemented the applicable provisions of the 2025 agreement.
“The Union remains entirely committed to constructive dialogue and to the swift restoration of normal academic activities as soon as these outstanding issues are addressed,” ASUU said.
