Suspected armed herders on Monday ambushed the entourage of the Divisional Police Officer of Ayilamo, in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, killing two police officers.
Sources in the community told PUNCH Online on Tuesday that the DPO, who had travelled to Makurdi on official assignment, was returning to Ayilamo when his entourage ran into the armed herders.
“At about 18:00 hours on Monday, some individuals identified as newly deployed Mobile Police officers to Ayilamo community were attacked and killed.
“The incident occurred while the officers were on their way from Ayilamo community to escort the Divisional Police Officer of Ayilamo, who was returning to Ayilamo from Makurdi,” one of the sources, who did not want to be mentioned, said.
Ayilamo community was attacked last Thursday by suspected armed herders, who killed four police officers and seven residents.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the state command, DSP Peter Aondongu, confirmed the incident and said the attackers killed two officers in the DPO’s entourage.
The PPRO said, ” The DPO came to Makurdi to carry some things and while going back to Ayilamo, he was attacked and lost two of his men in the attack.”
In another development, GISTSMATE MEDIA reported that at least nine passengers were killed after gunmen opened fire on a commercial bus at Dungus Junction in Kuru community, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The passengers were travelling to Jos when the attackers struck at about 9:40 p.m., shortly after the driver stopped at the junction to drop some passengers.
The shooting left the bus riddled with bullets, with blood reportedly visible inside the vehicle. Several other passengers sustained injuries and were taken to hospitals for treatment. READ MORE
