A yet-to-be-identified police officer has come under scrutiny after a viral video showed him allegedly drinking from a bottle believed to contain alcohol while conducting a stop-and-search operation.
The video, which has sparked widespread reactions on social media, captured the officer interacting with occupants of a stationary vehicle while repeatedly drinking from the bottle during the roadside operation.
In the footage, the officer is also heard calling out figures as one of the vehicle occupants operates a mobile phone, a development that has fuelled allegations of possible financial solicitation.
The incident has triggered public outrage, with many Nigerians questioning the officer’s conduct and calling for disciplinary action if the allegations are confirmed.
The officer’s actions, if verified, would contravene Section 100(1) of the Nigeria Police Act, 2021, which prohibits police officers from consuming alcohol, psychotropic substances, or stimulants while on duty.
The provision states:
“While on duty, a police officer shall not take any intoxicating liquor, psychotropic substances, or stimulants; where he does, he shall be punished in accordance with the police disciplinary procedures.”
Reacting to the viral video, the Nigeria Police Force said it had commenced efforts to identify the officer and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a post on X, the Force’s New Media Officer, Aliyu Giwa, said the police leadership was aware of the video and had launched an inquiry.
“The force leadership is aware of a viral video that appears to show a police officer allegedly soliciting financial gratification and drinking from a bottle believed to contain alcohol while interacting with vehicle occupants,” Giwa stated.
“We are working to identify the officer, determine the location, and clarify the circumstances of the incident.
“The Force assures the public that appropriate action will follow the outcome of the inquiry.”

The police have yet to disclose the identity of the officer or the location where the incident occurred.
As of the time of filing this report, investigations into the matter were ongoing.
