The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said the decision reflects the government’s recognition of the significance of the Hijrah celebration to Muslims across the state.
According to the commissioner, the Islamic New Year marks the historic migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, an event regarded as a defining moment in Islamic history and a symbol of faith, sacrifice and perseverance.
โAs a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, we have declared tomorrow, Tuesday, 16th June, 2026, a work-free day in the state,โ Oyelade stated.
He explained that the occasion offers an opportunity for reflection, prayer and renewed commitment to the values of peace, unity and mutual understanding among residents.
The state government urged citizens to use the holiday to pray for the continued peace, progress and development of Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.
Oyelade also encouraged residents to reflect on the lessons of the Hijrah, particularly its emphasis on resilience, devotion, community service and peaceful coexistence.
โThe Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer and community spirit. Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity and prosperity in our state and our nation,โ he said.
The commissioner further called on people of all faiths to embrace the spirit of brotherhood and solidarity that the celebration represents, stressing the importance of promoting harmony and understanding among diverse communities.
The declaration means government offices and public institutions in the state are expected to observe the holiday, allowing Muslim faithful and other residents to participate in activities marking the commencement of the new Islamic calendar year.
The Oyo State Government reiterated its commitment to fostering religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence, while wishing Muslims in the state and across Nigeria a peaceful and fulfilling Hijrah 1448AH celebration.
