Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has told the former captain of Super Eagles, Joseph Yobo to engage the country’s national team over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Wike delivered the blunt message directly to Yobo during commissioning of a project in Abuja.
The Minister expressed profound disappointment that he is forced to sit at home watching countries he has “never heard of” play on global television, while a football powerhouse like Nigeria is missing.
He pointed out the irony that over 13 players of Nigerian descent are actively representing other nations at the ongoing Mundial, yet the country’s main squad could not secure a ticket.
The Minister firmly stated that while some people choose to smile and clap for the national team, he will not applaud underperforming results.
GISTSMATE MEDIA reports that countries like Cape Verde, Curaçao, Uzbekistan, and Ecuador, who are considered underdogs in football world make it to the ongoing World Cup.
The Super Eagles fell short of the 2026 World Cup after a rocky qualification campaign in Group C, which concluded with a painful play-off final defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The failure of the super eagles to secure the ticket marks Nigeria’s second consecutive World Cup absence following their failure to make the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
