The Lagos State Police Command has arrested an officer caught in a viral video making derogatory and ethnically charged remarks against former Anambra State governor and Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, Peter Obi.
The police officer had claimed that an Igbo person would never become President of Nigeria. He is identified as Inspector Osumah Frank.
The Command disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, September 25, 2026, by its Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, saying it has commenced disciplinary action against the officer in accordance with the regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
The development follows widespread reactions to the viral video in which the officer, while travelling in a public transport vehicle, was heard making what the police described as “careless, inappropriate and uncultured remarks.”
The officer captured in a video in uniform, who appeared to be inside a commercial vehicle, accused Obi of being a criminal, ritualist, and internet fraudster (Yahoo), while alleging that Obi would turn Aso Rock into a “Yahoo office” if elected president.
Voices of some passengers speaking Igbo, condemning the officer, could also be heard in the background of the video.

“‘When I was the governor in Anambra, I left so-so-so amount of money, you are doing rituals. A small child who is doing Yahoo and all the rubbish he is doing.”
The video sparked reactions online, with social media users questioning how a serving police officer could openly make political and ethnic derogatory comments while appearing in police uniform.
The Lagos Command has now confirmed the identity of the officer and announced the commencement of disciplinary proceedings against him.
According to the Command, the remarks made by Inspector Frank were made in his personal capacity and should not be regarded as representing the official position of either the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Command has commenced appropriate disciplinary action against the officer in line with established regulations of the Nigeria Police Force,” Adebisi stated.
“It also wishes to make it clear that the statements made by the officer were made in his personal capacity and do not represent the position, views or official disposition of the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigeria Police Force.”
According to PPRO, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Tijani Fatai, had reiterated that police personnel must maintain professionalism, civility, discipline and respect for members of the public.
Adebisi said Fatai further stressed that wearing the police uniform comes with the responsibility of protecting the dignity and integrity of the Force.
“The Command will not condone any conduct capable of bringing the Force into disrepute or undermining public confidence in the Police,” Adebisi added.
The Command said it remained committed to transparency, accountability and “policing with humility and integrity.”
The development comes amid heightened political activities ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with public officials and security personnel facing increased scrutiny over politically partisan statements and conduct.
Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party, is currently the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) and remains a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.
