The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has linked banditry in Nigeria to the indiscriminate consumption of alcohol.
The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mojisola Adeyeye, stated this during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday.
Adeyeye, a professor, explained that the substance was dangerous to organs in the human body, including the brain, kidneys and liver.
She said that the sale of alcohol in sachets and PET bottles was approved decades ago but became uncontrollable, prompting NAFDAC to ensure that alcohol sold in less than 200ml is banned.
She said that though the ban did not sit well with some people, Nigerians are concerned about the future of their children.
“Alcohol encourages banditry, destroys the kidneys and liver. Although the ban on the sale of alcohol in sachets and PET bottles of less than 200ml did not sit well with some people, Nigerians are concerned about the future of their children,” she said.
Recall that GISTSMATE MEDIA reported that NAFDAC has ordered manufacturers of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and plastic bottles below 200ml to recall and destroy the affected products.
In a statement last month, NAFDAC director-general said the directive followed the expiration of the transition period given to manufacturers to comply with the federal government’s ban on the sale and production of alcoholic drinks in the prohibited pack sizes.
The ban took effect on January 1, 2026, following concerns over the accessibility of high-alcohol-content beverages in small, inexpensive and easily concealed packages.
Adeyeye said manufacturers found violating the ban must commence nationwide recalls of the affected products and submit periodic compliance reports to NAFDAC. READ MORE
