The police have arrested Mayowa Adejoorin, Osun commissioner for environment, in connection with gunshots that disrupted an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally in Ilesa on Saturday.
The incident reportedly left four persons injured, including a 14-year-old boy who was said to have been struck by a stray bullet while at his mother’s shop.
Abiodun Ojelabi, spokesperson of the Osun police command, said officers recovered exhibits, including expended cartridges and Amotekun caps, after the scene was cordoned off.
“Immediately the incident was reported, our personnel moved to the scene, cordoned off the area before some exhibits were recovered, which included expended cartridges and Amotekun personnel caps,” Ojelabi said.
“Also, Mr Adejoorin was arrested at the scene and has been taken to the command for questioning as part of the investigation process.”
The police said investigations into the shooting are ongoing.
ADELEKE CAMPAIGN CONDEMNS ARREST
The Imole Campaign Council, the campaign organisation of Ademola Adeleke, the state’s governor, condemned the commissioner’s arrest, describing it as politically motivated.
Addressing a press conference in Osogbo, Pelumi Olajengbesi, spokesperson of the council, alleged that the arrest was part of a broader effort to intimidate leaders of the Accord party ahead of the governorship election.
“The latest victim of this alarming pattern is the honourable commissioner for environment and sanitation, Hon. Mayowa Adejoorin,” he said.
“The manner of his arrest is particularly disturbing. We consider what happened to Hon. Adejoorin as nothing short of a bandit-like abduction carried out under the cover of police authority.”
Olajengbesi alleged that several Accord leaders in Ijesaland had recently been arrested on what he described as politically motivated allegations.
He urged Tunji Disu, inspector-general of police (IGP), to intervene and order Adejoorin’s immediate release.
“We demand answers. On what basis was Hon. Mayowa Adejoorin arrested? What offence has he committed? What evidence exists against him?” he asked.
The development comes hours after the Imole Campaign Council asked the IGP to redeploy Ibrahim Gotan, the commissioner of police overseeing security for the August 15 Osun governorship election, alleging that he has acted in a partisan manner.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Bamidele Sallam, chairman of the campaign council’s media and publicity sub-committee, accused Gotan of aiding attacks by thugs allegedly linked to the APC against Accord supporters.
