Oyo State Police Command has arrested six suspects linked to the Ahoro-Esiele school abductions in Oriire Local Government Area. The suspects were tracked through telephone conversations with the bandits.
Official security reports confirm none of the main bandits hiding in the forest have been arrested yet as they continue to evade tracking.
According to the Oyo State Police Command, those arrested are local informants and couriers, not the core bandits.
Two commercial motorcyclists were apprehended in Ojoo, Ibadan while allegedly trying to collect ransom.
Three others from Gbugbu, Kwara State and Ago-Are, Oyo State were picked up during follow-up operations. A university student was also arrested by military personnel after a victimβs phone was found with him. Security agencies withheld specific addresses due to ongoing prosecution.
The Oyo Police Public Relations Officer said intercepted calls showed informants giving bandits directions to navigate Old Oyo National Park and evade security borders.
Despite the NIN-SIM linkage policy, officials from the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy said the main bandits use call-routing technology and network-masking devices to hide their location and registration details.
The Central Bank of Nigeria and anti-graft agencies have frozen bank accounts linked to the suspects.
Security reports indicate ransom funds were routed through a commercial Bank account and other accounts belonging to the arrested couriers before distribution to the forest-based bandits.
