A Consultant Urologist, Prof Augustus Takure, has said that problems affecting the penis may serve as indicators of underlying physical, reproductive and psychological health conditions in men.
Takure explained that although the penis is primarily known as a sexual organ, its functions go beyond sexual activity and are closely linked to a man’s general wellbeing.
Speaking in a telephone interview, the urologist noted that the penis performs three major physiological functions, including the passage of urine, sexual intercourse and reproduction.
According to him, the organ helps in transmitting urine from the urinary bladder through the urethra to the outside of the body, while also conveying semen containing spermatozoa into the female reproductive system during intercourse.
He said: “Scientifically speaking, when there are problems with the penis or its ability to perform its normal functions, it may reflect disturbances in the man’s health.”
Takure explained that blockage of the urethra could make urination difficult and expose affected individuals to severe lower abdominal pain, urinary leakage and emotional distress.
“If the tube that passes urine through the penis is blocked, the man’s life can become miserable. He may experience severe pain, urinary incontinence and psychological disturbance,” he said.
The professor also linked male infertility to reproductive health challenges that may affect a man mentally and emotionally, especially in marriages where couples desire children but are unable to conceive after several years.
According to him, erectile dysfunction is another condition that may point to underlying health issues.
He stated that the inability to achieve or maintain erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse could negatively affect confidence, relationships and mental wellbeing.
“What is the value of a man who cannot satisfy a woman sexually? For many people, such conditions can create emotional and psychological problems,” he added.
Takure further warned against penile fracture, describing it as a painful condition that may occur during sexual intercourse or when an erect penis suffers sudden trauma.
He explained that the injury often leaves the affected person in severe pain and unable to continue sexual activity.
“A fracture of the penis is a serious condition. It can happen during sexual intercourse or if a man falls on an erect penis and it cracks,” he said.
The urologist advised men experiencing persistent urinary, fertility or erectile problems to seek prompt medical attention, stressing that early diagnosis and treatment could prevent complications.
