The Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Dr. Yunus Teliat Olushina Ayilara II, has called on the Nigerian government to execute the bandits responsible for the abduction of schoolchildren, teachers and a principal in Yawota and Esin-Ele communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, insisting that such criminals should never be granted amnesty.
The cleric made the remarks during his Jumat Friday sermon delivered in Yoruba language in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, where he strongly condemned the activities of kidnappers and bandits terrorising communities.
Speaking during the sermon, Ayilara said anyone found guilty of kidnapping and murdering innocent citizens should be killed after investigation and confirmation of their crimes, stressing that forgiveness should not be extended to such individuals.
According to him, “If the government arrests the kidnappers and after investigation discovers that they were the ones who abducted the students, children, teachers and principal, what the Holy Qur’an says is that you should not forgive them, but kill them immediately.”
The Islamic cleric particularly lamented the killing of a Mathematics teacher murdered by bandits, describing the act as wickedness beyond forgiveness.
He said, “Because someone who is wicked to the extent that he slaughtered a Mathematics teacher — how many people know Mathematics in the world? What made some people not go far in education is because of Mathematics.
“Someone wrote WAEC four times and still did not get credit in Mathematics, and that was why the person could not further his education.
“We now have someone whom God blessed with knowledge of Mathematics very well. We have some Mathematicians working in highly reputable companies earning huge salaries, but this particular person chose to serve his community in order to build the future.”
Ayilara added that the deceased teacher sacrificed better opportunities to educate children in his community before he was killed by bandits.
“He made himself a teacher and was teaching children, yet the bandits killed him. So, the government will arrest such people and later grant them amnesty? Whoever indulges in such acts will not receive the forgiveness of God,” he said.
The cleric further criticised the idea of pardoning bandits and kidnappers, questioning the moral justification behind amnesty programmes for violent criminals.
“How can you forgive someone who is heartless and wicked like soap? Forgive them as how? What the Holy Qur’an says is that when you arrest them and investigate that they are truly the perpetrators, there is nothing else than to kill them,” he stated.
His comments come amid growing concerns over insecurity, kidnappings and attacks on schools and rural communities across parts of Nigeria, with residents repeatedly calling on the government to take tougher actions against armed bandits and kidnappers operating in different states.
