There was sporadic shooting on Saturday night at the premises of Union Baptist Primary School, where the Ataoja D Ward 4 collation centre is located in Osogbo, Osun State.
The gunshots, reportedly fired by security personnel, were heard between 9.15pm and 9.30pm, causing residents and other people around the area to flee for safety.
It was not immediately clear what triggered the shooting.
PUNCH correspondent who was close to the scene reported that security personnel fired several shots into the air, while canisters were also released within the premises.
The shooting persisted for more than 15 minutes, with many people close to the collation centre running for cover.
The incident occurred as the collation of results from Saturday’s governorship election was ongoing at different centres across the state.
In the ongoing election, the incumbent Ademola Adeleke of Accord Party is fighting to retain the position, while he’s facing strong contest from Bola Oyebamiji of All Progressive Congress (APC).
In another development, GISTSMATE MEDIA reports that the Osun State Police Command has arrested an officer posted to the Registration Area Centre in Modakeke Ward 10, Ife East Local Government Area, following the accidental discharge of tear gas that sparked panic during Saturday’s governorship election.
The command’s response followed viral video clips on social media depicting a chaotic scene in Modakeke, where onlookers expressed anger in Yoruba at police officers, alleging unprovoked tear gas firing at a polling site.
