A 33 year old woman, identified as Olaide Adekunle, reportedly sold her baby in Lagos State in an attempt to repay a loan of 600,000 naira.
According to reports, Olaide, who lives in the Sango area of Ogun State, traveled to Lagos to carry out the act. Her husband later told authorities that she left home on March 15 with their baby girl, Mordiat Rasak, but returned without the child.
This raised alarm, and the matter was reported. She was later arrested by the police, where she confessed that she sold the baby to settle a debt she owed to a microfinance bank.
The case has since been transferred for further investigation, especially to determine how the baby can be traced and safely recovered.
In a related development, in an operation that lasted from Wednesday night into the early hours of Thursday, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Lagos State Command, busted a baby factory in Okuju, Ilado, Badagry area of Lagos.
The operatives rescued 18 pregnant women and 10 children. They also arrested the operators of the facility, Joy Okeke and Raphael Agwu.
Commandant, Lagos State, NSCDC, Adedotun Keshinro, made these revelations during a parade of victims and suspects at their Badagry office.
One of the victims said there was an agreement that she would be paid one million Naira. Another said hers was a N1.8m deal.
Meanwhile, according to Keshinro, the operations followed actionable intelligence that lasted three weeks. READ MOREÂ
