Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti has again confirmed that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi left substantial savings for his successor, stating that he personally assisted in converting and investing approximately $155 million while serving as CEO of Diamond Bank.
In a widely circulated video clip shared on X (formerly Twitter), Otti said: “I want to restate that Mr Peter Obi actually left the money he said he left. I documented it. I was the CEO of Diamond Bank then and I helped him exchange the money to about $155 million which were invested in some of the banks and in some Eurobonds.”
Otti explained that Obi had wanted to leave the funds in cash at the end of his tenure in 2014, but they instead structured the investments in tier-two capital of some Nigerian banks and Eurobonds, some of which had maturities extending to 2023. He has previously documented the matter in a June 2020 newspaper article.
This is not a new claim. Otti made similar public statements as far back as 2017, when he confirmed Obi left $50 million each in Diamond Bank, Fidelity Bank and Access Bank (totalling about $150 million). He repeated the details more extensively in December 2022 while campaigning as the Labour Party governorship candidate in Abia, during a South-East stakeholders summit in Enugu. At the time, he noted that some investments had not yet matured.
Obi has long maintained that he handed over significant savings (including around $150–155 million in foreign currency investments plus naira holdings) rather than debt when he left office in March 2014.
Otti, who later became Abia Governor in 2023, has been one of the most consistent banking-sector figures to corroborate the claim from first-hand knowledge.
The recent recirculation of the video on platforms including X comes amid ongoing political discussions around Obi’s record of fiscal management.
Independent verification of the precise current status or utilisation of those specific investments after maturity would require official statements from the Anambra State government under subsequent administrations.
