The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, demanding immediate implementation of the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement or risk a nationwide industrial action.
Speaking at a press conference held in Abuja on Friday, ASUU President, Dr. Chris Piwuna, said the unionâs patience is wearing thin over the governmentâs continued failure to address longstanding issues plaguing Nigeriaâs public universities.
Dr. Piwuna highlighted nine key concerns that remain unresolved, chief among them the stalled renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, which he said has been on hold since 2017. He also pointed to the withheld salaries of lecturers from the 2022 strike period and the lingering problems associated with the controversial Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
âThese issues are not new,â Piwuna said. âThey speak to the governmentâs persistent neglect and lack of commitment to the education sector.â
He criticised the governmentâs failure to release revitalisation funds and earned academic allowances, noting that previous promisesâsuch as the planned injection of âŠ150 billion into the university system and the regularisation of allowances by 2026âhave yet to be honoured.
Piwuna raised serious concerns over âmarginalisation and victimisationâ of union members in certain state-owned universities, especially in Kogi State University and Lagos State University.
