Boost Your Baby’s Brain: Nigerian Superfoods That Prevent Malnutrition

The first years of a child’s life are a critical period for growth and development. During this time, babies need enough energy, protein, vitamins and minerals to support their growing bodies and brains.

For many Nigerian families, providing a nutritious diet can seem expensive. However, some affordable local foods can provide important nutrients when included in a varied diet.

Breast milk remains the recommended main source of nutrition for babies during the first six months of life. From around six months, complementary foods should be introduced while breastfeeding continues.

Affordable Nigerian foods that can help provide the nutrients babies need for healthy growth and development.

Eggs
Eggs are a relatively affordable source of high-quality protein and provide nutrients including choline, iron, vitamin B12 and other vitamins and minerals. Choline is important for normal brain development, while protein supports the growth of muscles and other tissues.

For babies, prepare beans thoroughly and adjust the texture according to their stage of development. Avoid adding excessive salt, seasoning or sugar.

Fish
Fish provides protein and several nutrients needed during childhood. Some types of fish also provide omega-3 fatty acids, which are important components of the brain and support normal development.

When preparing fish for a baby, remove all bones carefully and cook it thoroughly. Choose suitable fish and avoid varieties known to contain high levels of mercury.

Fruits
Fruits can provide vitamins, minerals, fibre and other beneficial nutrients. Banana and pawpaw are relatively easy to find and can be softened or mashed for babies who have started complementary feeding.

Instead of relying on fruit juice, give your babies appropriately prepared whole fruit. This provides more fibre and avoids giving the child unnecessary added sugar.
