The controversial comment regarding the dominance of the Muslim-Muslim ticket was made by Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, the prominent Islamic scholar and Chairman of the Council of Scholars of the Izala Movement worldwide.
During a mass wedding ceremony and political gathering organized by the Kano State Government, Sheikh Jingir aggressively endorsed the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima political model ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a viral video recorded at the event, Jingir spoke in Hausa and asserted that the 2023 Muslim-Muslim ticket proved that Muslims outnumber Christians in Nigeria.
He stated that the political arrangement must continue to succeed to sustain this perceived dominance, going as far as claiming that Nigeria is a “Muslim country” and suggesting that those who oppose the ticket should leave.
The cleric’s remarks have drawn fierce condemnation from both Christian leaders and prominent political figures across Nigeria.
The Chairman of the Northern Christian Association (NCA) Rev. Joseph John Hayab, stated that Jingir’s comments exposed the deep-seated religious biases that northern Christians have complained about for decades.
The former Minister of Aviation and Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa strongly rejected the claim, calling it provocative, untrue, and dangerous.
In a statement shared via social media, Fani-Kayode reminded the public that Nigeria is a secular, multi-religious state and urged the cleric to apologize to the Christian community.
Also, the former Minister of Youth and Sports slammed the cleric’s logic, declaring that Nigeria is not a “Muslim trophy” and that governance should be judged on security, economy, and infrastructure rather than religious identity.
