Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has criticised the federal government’s handling of insecurity.
In a statement on Sunday by Phrank Shaibu, his senior special assistant on public communication, Atiku said the reported killing of 5,091 people in violent incidents over three months should prompt stronger action to protect citizens.
The former vice-president linked the situation to the weaknesses in budget implementation and spending priorities of the Tinubu administration.
He said the figures represented families and communities affected by insecurity, urging the government to treat the situation as a priority.
Atiku also questioned whether available resources were being deployed effectively to strengthen the country’s security architecture.
He noted that delays or gaps in implementing appropriations for defence and security could affect the ability of the armed forces and other security agencies to respond to threats.
“These figures are the human cost of every padded budget, every frivolous expenditure and every failure to fully implement funds appropriated for critical national priorities,” he said.
The former vice-president welcomed the recently announced increase in the salaries of military personnel but said improved remuneration should be accompanied by better equipment, operational funding and welfare support.
“Our soldiers deserve better pay, but morale is about much more than salaries,” Atiku said.
“They require adequate equipment, operational funding, timely allowances, proper welfare for their families and the assurance that the government they defend is as committed to their mission as they are.”
He called for greater attention to defence spending and improved implementation of approved allocations, alongside measures to reduce what he described as unnecessary government expenditure.
Atiku said protecting lives remained a fundamental responsibility of government and urged the administration to intensify efforts against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violent crime.
He said the reported death toll should not be viewed merely as a statistic, but as an indication of the human impact of the country’s security challenges.
