A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has described former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as an “impossible” person to work with, alleging that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate does not value people who are not Fulani.
Lawal made the claims in a recent media interview which has been circulating on social media.
The former SGF, who said he once hoped to work with Atiku, alleged that the former vice president is “full of himself” and expects people around him to address him as “Mr President”.
“I used to go to him. We used to discuss. I was even hoping at one time I’d be able to work with him,” Lawal said.
“What happened?”
He replied: “It’s impossible to work with him, with my own type of person. It’s not possible. He’s a man full of himself. Everything must be him. He must give it to you at his own wish. He must be in his house.

Lawal also criticised Atiku’s security arrangements, saying the former vice president still moves around with a large convoy despite having left office.
“He’s a former vice president. How many years was he vice president? His convoy is longer than that of all I know up to now. He still goes with the security, just clearing the path.
“Before he goes to a venue, they still send security to clean the place.”
Asked if his criticism was the reason he refers to Atiku as “Kachala”, Lawal said the description was deliberate.
“He’s Kachala,” he said.
Asked whether the description was fair, Lawal replied: “Extremely. I didn’t get a better word for what I know about him. I didn’t get a better word. You know, I searched for my word.”
Explaining the term, Lawal said it referred to a person who does not recognise the value of people who do not belong to his preferred group.
“It’s a man that doesn’t see life in you if you are not a Fulani man. You are nothing. He doesn’t see you if you are not a Fulani man,” he said.
“I can’t say maybe as a Muslim, but if you are not a Fulani man, you are entitled to nothing from him or for him or by him.”
Lawal was also challenged over perceptions that most of the people who have worked with Atiku in Adamawa and elsewhere are Christians.
When asked to name one, he mentioned Maxwell Giledo, whom he identified as Atiku’s former legal aide.
He alleged that Giledo had remained loyal to Atiku despite what he described as poor treatment.
“Maxwell wanted to be a senator. He stopped Maxwell and wanted to give his son the ticket,” Lawal said.
“Maxwell Giledo was his SA legal, isn’t it? When he was VP.
“Maxwell Giledo remained loyal in spite of the maltreatment he was receiving from him.”
Lawal also mentioned Boniface Haruna, saying Atiku had selected him as a running mate in the past because of the need to have a Christian on the ticket.
“He took Boniface Haruna as his vice president. He was a deputy governorship candidate because he had to take a Christian in those days,” he said.
He further questioned the continued relationship between Atiku and some of his former associates.
“Where is Reverend Jolingame? Have you ever seen Reverend Jolingame around here?
“Who are you saying the Christians are around here? Where is Boss Mustapha, who slaved and almost killed himself working for Atiku? Are they with Atiku?
“Which Christian are you talking about? Tell me one now.”
Lawal also said he had left the African Democratic Congress (ADC), although he did not elaborate on the specific internal developments that led to his departure.
“There are people in ADC. I don’t know, I left ADC now because of the people that are around there. I can’t imagine, after what they did in their primaries, I’ll go and sit with some of them,” he said.
His comments come amid renewed political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Atiku among opposition figures involved in efforts to build a political platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Lawal, a former APC chieftain, has also been involved in opposition political activities and was previously associated with Atiku during the 2019 presidential election campaign.
