The Anambra State Government has alleged that more than 200 workers of the state Water Corporation died during the administration of former governor Peter Obi due to unpaid salaries and other entitlements.
In a fresh post on X on Monday, the Anambra State New Media Office, the official communication platform of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, accused former governor Peter Obi of neglecting workers of the state Water Corporation by failing to pay their salaries, pensions and other entitlements, amid an ongoing dispute between the state government and Obi over the financial record of his tenure.
The state government had previously accused Obi, who is the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), of leaving behind loans that successive administrations have continued to repay.
Obi rejected the claim, saying he did not leave any debt behind, and released his handover notes as evidence to support his position.
In its latest statement, however, the Soludo administration alleged that the former governor abandoned workers of the Anambra Water Corporation, particularly over unpaid salaries and other benefits.
The government also questioned Obi’s previous description of the corporation as inactive, asking why government funds were still allocated to the agency during his administration.

The statement reads, “Over 200 Anambra Water Corporation staff died under Peter Obi’s administration as a result of non-payment of entitlements, while the corporation’s allocated funds were given as loans to private contractors.
It further alleged that the affected workers had appealed for the release of their unpaid salaries and entitlements during Obi’s tenure.
The statement added, “In this special prayer session, the staff of Water Corporation prayed to God to soften the heart of Anambra’s “Pharaoh,” Obi, so he would release their many years of unpaid salaries & entitlements
The state government also questioned why Obi remained a subject of complaints by former Water Corporation workers if, as his supporters claimed, the agency was already inactive before he became governor.
It said, “The question is: Why do the workers keep mentioning Obi in this matter?
“While Obi’s team claimed that the Corporation was dead before Obi arrived, why was Ngige paying their salaries, paying electricity bills, buying water treatment for the waterworks in Onitsha, and didn’t declare the Corporation dead? Those are the questions Obi needs to answer.
The government further said previous administrations did not describe the corporation as inactive, adding, “Also, Ezeife, Mbadinuju, & Ngige never labeled the Corporation as dead only Peter Obi did
It also questioned the continued allocation of public funds to the corporation under Obi if the agency was considered inactive.
The statement concluded, “If that’s the case, how come Obi’s government allocated money to the board in the budget and then gave those funds to private contractors as loans? May their souls rest in peace. Amen”
