The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has pledged to provide between 11 and 15 kilowatts of solar power for every Nigerian roof within 11 months of taking office if elected in 2027.
Adebayo made the pledge on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time.
“I promise that between 11 to 15 kilowatts of solar power will be put on every roof within 11 months,” he said.
He said his administration would build solar-panel manufacturing plants across the country and train Nigerians to install and maintain solar power systems.
According to him, the proposed solar clusters would supply electricity for basic household needs, generate employment and produce up to 32,000 megawatts.
“You put all of that, and you generate employment, and you now generate up to 32,000 megawatts from these clusters that you do. Then you forget about it. I told them that the way we are going to manage the national grid.
“National grid is a backup. In case a cluster fails, you will power from there,” Adebayo said.
The SDP candidate said the factories could be established through partnerships with countries including China, Turkey and India, with Nigerians trained to operate them.
He said he had previously advised the government on power-related matters and tested solar technology in his hometown, where he claimed to have trained about 2,000 people.
“I did an experiment in my hometown. I have about 2,000 people I trained on solar, because I manufacture the solar panels myself. I do lithium battery.
“The only thing I haven’t got the technological power to do is the inverter. So I buy the inverter. I do the solar battery,” he said.
Adebayo also advocated government investment in strategic sectors, including aviation and manufacturing, arguing that such investments could be made through operating and maintenance contracts instead of leaving the sectors entirely to private operators.
On electricity generation, he said his administration would promote domestic refining and tackle crude oil theft, which he identified as major challenges to energy security and economic growth.
He claimed that up to 900,000 barrels of crude oil were still being stolen, saying the recovery of the oil would improve supply without requiring additional government spending.
Adebayo further said public investment in sectors such as electricity and education could create jobs, as workers employed in those sectors would earn incomes.
