2027: G-100 Proposes Four-Year Single-Term Government For Opposition Coalition

The G100 has proposed a Government of National Competence anchored on a single four-year transition term as part of efforts to unite Nigeria’s opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The proposal was presented by Mallam Salihu Mohammed Lukman at the Summit of Nigeria’s Opposition Political Parties held on Monday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.

The summit was attended by representatives of several opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress, Allied Peoples Movement, Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Redemption Party and Social Democratic Party.

Presidential and vice-presidential candidates, as well as the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, were also present at the gathering.

Lukman said the proposed arrangement would focus on competence, integrity, national inclusion and fair representation among political parties contributing to the opposition alliance.

According to him, the proposed government would be supported by a four-year National Reset Programme designed to address key national challenges and lay the foundation for democratic renewal.

He stressed that the proposed single-term arrangement must be backed by a binding and enforceable agreement rather than mere political promises.

Lukman said any agreement reached by the participating parties must be properly documented, witnessed and contain clear consequences for anyone who violates its terms.

He pointed to the failure of opposition parties to unite during the 2023 presidential election as evidence of the consequences of political division.

According to him, votes cast for major opposition candidates exceeded those received by the eventual winner when combined, but the division of opposition votes allowed the candidate with fewer overall votes than the combined opposition bloc to emerge victorious under Nigeria’s constitutional electoral system.

To coordinate the proposed coalition, the G100 recommended the establishment of three standing bodies: a Central Leadership Committee, a Publicity and Communication Committee, and a Legal Committee.

The group also proposed the creation of five working groups expected to develop recommendations within four weeks.

The working groups will focus on developing a National Covenant for Democratic Renewal, a Single-Term Transition Charter, a National Reform Programme, a Framework for Opposition Unity and a roadmap for selecting a common presidential candidate.

Lukman clarified that the summit was not calling on political parties to dissolve or asking presidential candidates to immediately withdraw from the race.

He said the immediate objective was to create a platform for dialogue and negotiation among opposition parties.

The G100 representative urged political parties and candidates to openly state their positions, warning that hidden disagreements and unresolved differences could eventually weaken or destroy the proposed coalition.

He maintained that disagreements could be resolved through negotiations if they were openly discussed.

Lukman also stressed that the G100 was not supporting any particular political party or presidential candidate.

According to him, the group’s primary objective was to encourage the emergence of a strong and united opposition capable of offering Nigerians a credible alternative government in 2027.
