2027: Tinubu’s Minister Urges Makinde To Join APC

Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, has made a fresh appeal to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to join the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Goronyo made the appeal on Monday during the flag-off of the dualisation of the Ibadan-Ijebu Road in Ogun State, where President Bola Tinubu was represented by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The minister said Makinde’s decision to join the ruling party would enable Oyo State to align with the Federal Government and benefit from the infrastructure and development initiatives of the Tinubu administration.

Describing the APC as a “progressive banner”, Goronyo openly invited the Oyo governor to join the party.

“I therefore warmly welcome and openly invite His Excellency the Governor of Oyo State, Mr Engineer Seyi Makinde, to take the natural giant step into the All Progressives Congress, the APC,” he said.

“Come and align Oyo State fully with the centre under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

Goronyo made the appeal while highlighting Federal Government infrastructure projects across the country, including the planned dualisation of the Ibadan-Ijebu Road.

He said the road project would strengthen connectivity between Ibadan in Oyo State and Ijebu communities in Ogun State, while improving the movement of people and goods along the corridor.

Makinde was not present at the ceremony.

The minister’s invitation comes against the backdrop of Makinde’s reported presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 election. The governor is currently associated with the Allied Peoples Movement, which recently unveiled him as its presidential candidate.

At the party’s national convention in Bauchi on August 13, Makinde was presented alongside former Director-General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura, who was unveiled as his running mate.

Makinde had at the convention called for a political alternative capable of addressing Nigeria’s economic and security challenges. He also advocated greater devolution of powers to state governments and promised to reform the country’s security architecture if elected.

The APM has subsequently positioned Makinde as a major challenger to Tinubu in the 2027 presidential contest.

The latest invitation from Goronyo therefore adds a fresh political dimension to the unfolding 2027 realignment, with the Federal Government seeking to draw the Oyo governor into the ruling party while Makinde continues his presidential campaign under the APM platform.

The event was attended by Works Minister Dave Umahi, the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rasheed Ladoja, Ogun State Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele and the APC governorship candidate in Oyo State, Sharafadeen Abiodun Ali.
