The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed reports suggesting the presence of a terrorist base in Nigeria’s South West, even as military operations continue to secure the release of abducted pupils in Oyo State.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, expressed condolences to the families of victims, the Oyo State Government, and affected communities following the attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area.
He described the abduction of pupils and staff as a “callous and reprehensible act,” assuring that the Armed Forces is committed to ensuring the safe and unconditional return of all victims.
The DHQ clarified that recent reports of a terrorist base in the South West do not reflect current intelligence, noting that earlier clearance operations in the Old Oyo National Park had significantly weakened criminal elements in the area.
It stated that ongoing intelligence assessments do not support claims of a permanent terrorist structure in forests or hinterlands across the region, warning against narratives that could cause unnecessary panic.
The military added that troops remain deployed across forest corridors and ungoverned spaces in coordinated search and rescue operations alongside other security agencies and local vigilante groups.
According to the DHQ, recent engagements with criminal elements have continued as part of sustained efforts to track down the abductors and rescue the victims.
The Armed Forces also urged residents to support ongoing operations by providing credible intelligence, stressing that community cooperation remains critical to restoring security in affected areas.
