GISTSMATE MEDIA reports that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has zoned its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election to the south.
The decision was taken on Saturday at the party’s national convention in a resolution adopted after a motion moved by Afam Victor and seconded by Seyi Sowumi.
The party also allocated the 2031 slot to the north.
The convention also ratified all members of the NDC’s national executive committee following a motion moved by Victor Umeh, senator representing Anambra central.
The zoning arrangement is in line with the party’s strategy to ensure rotational representation between the north and south in its future presidential bids.
The convention ongoing convention is hosting the likes of Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Aisha Yesufu, among others.
GISTSMATE MEDIA earlier reported that Obi is widely believed to be the leading aspirant for the NDC presidential ticket, with former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, tipped as a potential running mate.
There are also growing speculations that former president Goodluck Jonathan may join the presidential race via the party.
Party insiders say the convention will also serve as an opportunity for the NDC to demonstrate its growing national acceptance and formalise ongoing political realignments ahead of the elections.
The development comes amid increasing consultations and defections by opposition figures and political stakeholders seeking a broader coalition platform capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.
