U.S. President Donald Trump has stirred fresh controversy after sharing a social media post that appeared to rename the Strait of Hormuz as the “Strait of Trump.”
The post, reshared on Truth Social on Wednesday, featured a map of the strategic waterway with the altered name prominently displayed, though there is no indication of any formal attempt to rename it.
The development has drawn attention due to the strait’s critical role in global energy supply and its sensitivity in relations between the United States and Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and serves as one of the world’s most vital oil transit routes, with a significant share of global crude and petroleum products passing through it daily.
Trump’s action comes amid renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the waterway frequently at the centre of disputes over sanctions, oil exports, navigation rights and nuclear negotiations.
The U.S. president had earlier suggested the possibility of referring to the waterway differently, a remark widely interpreted as provocative rather than a formal policy proposal.
International waterways are typically recognised through long-standing geographic and diplomatic conventions, making any unilateral renaming largely symbolic and unlikely to gain international acceptance.
Oil markets reacted to the development, with prices rising on Thursday as traders weighed the risk of disruption around the strait and ongoing uncertainty surrounding U.S.-Iran nuclear talks.
