A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has explained why former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was named deputy chairman of Atiku Abubakar’s Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Momodu, who is the Deputy Director-General of the campaign’s Media and Communications Directorate, said the decision was aimed at honouring El-Rufai’s contributions and sacrifices to Nigeria’s political landscape.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Friday, Momodu said El-Rufai’s current legal challenges were politically motivated, insisting that his inclusion in the campaign structure was a recognition of his role and commitment.
Recall that Atiku on Thursday unveiled the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, with Kashim Ibrahim-Imam appointed as chairman and El-Rufai named deputy chairman.
Explaining the decision, Momodu said: “It is a way of honouring his sacrifice because his travails, I can say, are quite political in nature.”
He argued that El-Rufai’s decision to return to Nigeria despite knowing he could face arrest showed his commitment to the country.

Momodu also criticised the bail conditions attached to El-Rufai’s case, describing them as excessive and questioning why the former governor would be subjected to such treatment.
“The bail conditions given to him are so horrendous that even his enemies would wonder why he has to go through such painful experience in the hands of a government that he helped to midwife.”
The ADC chieftain further highlighted El-Rufai’s political influence, claiming that the former governor played a significant role in the emergence of President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 election.
“If not for him, I’m sure President Bola Tinubu will not be in the office today.”
Atiku unveiled the campaign council as part of preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with the structure featuring several political figures, including former APC national chairman John Oyegun, Dele Momodu, Dino Melaye and other party stakeholders.
