About 17,000 Nigerians, who went missing, mostly after attacks in insurgency-troubled Northeast and other conflict zones, remain unaccounted for several years after efforts to have them return to their families yielded few reunions.
The update was given during the street remembrance campaign supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) ahead of this year’s commemoration of the International Day of the Disappeared, observed on August 30 yearly.
Those unaccounted for represent a smaller number as compared to the figures of 2025, which indicated 23,659 missing persons.
The Protection of Family Links Delegate with the Mubi office of ICRC, Emeline Montel, said about 3,000 of the missing persons are from Adamawa State.
The ICRC official clarified that the figures, captured by his organisation, helps families in search of missing relatives. He assured that efforts were unrelenting to find and reunite missing people with their families.
One of several relatives of missing Nigerians narrated how she and her family suffered after four members of the family could not be seen.
A member of the Association of Families of Disappeared Persons in Adamawa State, Habiba Mustapha, who participated in a street cleaning and public awareness, organised in Yola by relatives of missing persons, said she and her family were enduring intense uncertainty.
Habiba, an indigene of Gwoza in Borno State, who was displaced to Adamawa, said: “The disappearance of my relatives is a continuing source of emotional stress and economic difficulty. Some of these missing persons were bread winners. Our children are not going to school. Look at me here in a completely new environment.”
