Paris Saint-Germain and Morocco defender, Achraf Hakimi, has explained why his mother has managed his finances and assets throughout his professional career, saying the arrangement began long before his marriage and was built on trust established during his childhood.
The 27-year-old made the clarification during an interview in which he addressed widespread reports that his wealth and properties are held in his mother’s name.
Hakimi said the decision was not influenced by his divorce from Spanish actress Hiba Abouk, but had existed since he first began earning money as a young footballer.
Financial Management
Hakimi said he started receiving income at a young age through football but lacked the knowledge and legal capacity to manage his finances.
“Since I was little, as I said, when I was in football, I always took money, but I couldn’t manage it,” Hakimi said.
According to him, his mother took responsibility for managing his earnings and became his most trusted adviser on financial matters.
“It was my mother who managed all that. I’ve always learned from her how to do things. She was the one who helped me carry things, you know? So I always asked her anything.”
Hakimi said she guided him on major financial decisions, including purchasing houses and cars, and managing his growing income as his career progressed.
“When to buy a house, when to buy a car, when to earn a lot of money. That’s why we also decided not to change things because it was the moment we knew we could have a good structure between us. So, she was the one who managed everything.”
‘It has nothing to do with my marriage’
The Morocco international rejected suggestions that the financial arrangement was created to shield his assets during his marriage or divorce proceedings.
“No, no, it’s not for marriage. It’s always, as I said, since I was little.”
Hakimi explained that because he was under 18 when he started earning professionally, his mother had to manage his finances on his behalf.
“Until you turn 18, you can’t use a bank account. So, my mother was the one who managed everything.”
He added that there had been no reason to alter the arrangement because it had continued to work well for the family.
“Since things were going well, I said, let’s leave things like this. Every time it was more successful, well, you know, the mother is the boss of the house. I’ve told you before, the boss, the patron. She controls everything and we talk to her about everything. So, she’s responsible for everything.”
Divorce and asset controversy
Hakimi’s financial arrangements became the subject of global attention in 2023 after reports emerged during his divorce proceedings with Abouk, whom he married in 2020 after the couple met in 2018.
The former couple have two sons, Amín and Naim.
Media reports at the time claimed that Abouk sought half of Hakimi’s assets but allegedly discovered that many of his reported earnings and properties were not registered in his name.
Neither Hakimi nor his legal representatives publicly confirmed those reports during the divorce proceedings.
In an interview with ELLE, Abouk said she needed time to recover from the emotional impact of the separation.
“I am fine. There are days when it is like this, and others in which you’ve to know how to take blows and make decisions, sometimes complicated, and get used to new situations.”
She added, “The important thing is that I have the peace of mind of having tried and having done everything I had to do.”
Abouk also said the separation was emotionally difficult because the couple share two children.
Mother responds to earlier reports
Hakimi’s mother, Saida Mouh, also addressed the speculation in 2023, saying she was unaware of any formal transfer of her son’s fortune into her name.
“If he has taken any action to protect himself, I’m unaware of it,” she told Moroccan media.
She added, “What’s the problem if the news is true? If my son does not do this, he will not be able to get rid of that woman [Hiba Abouk].”
Her comments generated widespread debate but did not provide confirmation that Hakimi’s assets had been legally transferred.
One of Africa’s leading footballers
Hakimi is regarded as one of the world’s best right-backs. A product of Real Madrid’s academy, he has played for Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, winning league titles in Spain, Germany, Italy and France.
At international level, he has been one of Morocco’s key players, helping the Atlas Lions reach the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the best finish ever achieved by an African nation at the tournament.
He also played a leading role in Morocco’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, further strengthening his reputation as one of Africa’s most accomplished footballers.
