The Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media to the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, Apostle Kassy Chukwu, has apologised to singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, and the people of Edo State over comments he made suggesting the singer should not expect to perform in the state during the governor’s tenure.
Chukwu, in a video posted by THEWILL NEWSPAPER via X.com on Saturday, said the earlier comments were made in his personal capacity and did not represent the position of the Edo State Government or Okpebholo.
“I didn’t do that video as an appointee of the government and I didn’t do that video by the instruction of the governor of Edo State or by the permission of the governor of Edo State. I did that video in my personal capacity as a son of the governor who was offended by the video statement that the governor’s children should be ashamed of their father,” he said.
The aide apologised specifically to Okpebholo for any embarrassment his comments might have caused the governor, describing him as a leader who abhors violence.
“I want to apologise to his Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for whatever embarrassment my comment may have caused him. Our governor is a peace-loving governor who does not tolerate violence or threat or oppression,” he said.
Chukwu also extended an apology to Edo indigenes, saying his comments reflected his personal opinion and not the collective position of the people of the state.
“My comment, in my personal opinion, did not reflect the opinion of all Edo people in any way. Edo people are loving people and they are accommodating people. I want to apologise to every son and daughter of Edo who have seen my video as disrespectful and not accepted. I want to say I’m really sorry,” he said.
Turning directly to the singer, the aide asked Davido to disregard his earlier remarks and assured him of a warm welcome to the state.
“I apologise to every good-meaning Edo person and to my brother, Davido. I love you. Please disregard my earlier comment. Edo loves you and, of course, you are welcome home anytime, any day, in Edo State. Feel free to come to Edo State,” he said.
Chukwu further described Okpebholo as a peace-keeping governor committed to the development of the state, citing ongoing efforts in infrastructure, education and security.
“Our governor is a lovely, peace-keeping governor. He does not tolerate violence or any form of disrespect. Edo is shining. The governor is doing everything within his power to make sure that Edo works again, with all the good road infrastructure, good education, security, and bring back nightlife to Edo. Edo is a safe place for investors to come in and invest, and we the good people of Edo welcome everyone,” he said.
