As Valentine’s Day draws near, the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) 2023 warning against money bouquets is making the rounds again.
The apex bank had classified money bouquets, a popular gift among lovers, as a form of naira abuse.
In a flier shared on its official Twitter handle in 2023, the CBN listed money bouquets alongside other prohibited practices, including spraying, selling, squeezing, and defacing naira notes.
Citizens were urged to report incidents of naira abuse, with the CBN emphasising: “It is your civic duty to protect the naira. Report naira abuse today.” Toll-free hotlines were provided for reporting such offences.
The warning followed a widely publicised case involving actress and cosmetologist Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin.
In 2023, she was arrested by operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) after a video emerged of her spraying and stepping on newly redesigned naira notes at a party.
Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, under which she was charged, states: “A person who tampers with a coin or note issued by the Bank is guilty of an offence and shall on conviction be liable to imprisonment for a term not less than six months or to a fine not less than N50,000 or to both such fine and imprisonment.”
With Valentine’s Day still associated with lavish gifts and money bouquets, the CBN’s guidance remains relevant: citizens are reminded to celebrate responsibly and avoid practices that could constitute naira abuse.
