The United States military said it carried out a “heavy wave of strikes” against Iran on Thursday in retaliation for what it described as Tehran’s targeting of American military bases in Jordan.
The strikes mark a sharp escalation in tensions in the Middle East, where fighting has intensified after a nearly week-long pause, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.
“We completed a heavy wave of strikes against Iran,” the US military said, describing the operation as a response to attacks on American bases in Jordan.
The renewed hostilities have drawn in Iran’s regional proxies, further expanding the conflict and diminishing hopes of a swift return to diplomatic negotiations.
“Fighting has intensified after a nearly week-long pause, drawing in the Islamic republic’s proxies and appearing to have dashed hopes of a quick return to negotiations,” officials said.
Neither Washington nor Tehran has indicated an immediate willingness to de-escalate, fuelling concerns that the latest exchange could trigger further military action across the region.
In another development, GISTSMATE MEDIA reports that US-Saudi strikes on Iraq killed at least 20 militants, including several Iranians, on Wednesday, according to the Hashed al-Shaabi, an armed Iraqi alliance that includes pro-Iran groups.
The United States and Saudi Arabia said they had struck Iran-backed armed militants in Iraq in response to attacks on US forces and Saudi oil facilities.
Washington and Tehran are Iraq’s main allies, but their enmity has long turned the country into a proxy battleground and left successive governments struggling to maintain a delicate balance between the foes.
The Hashed al-Shaabi, also known as the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), said that at least 20 fighters “were martyred and another 32 wounded according to a preliminary toll”. READ MORE
