United Kosofe: Why Reconciliation is Now Urgent After 2023 Setback ? || By Okundalaiye Henry

In the 2023 presidential election, even a relatively united Kosofe failed to deliver for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (Jagaban), the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Peter Obi of the Labour Party defeated Tinubu in Kosofe LGA, polling 46,554 votes (51.51%) against Tinubu’s 36,883 votes (40.81%).

Kosofe was one of the LGAs (out of 20 in Lagos State) where the APC presidential ticket fell short, highlighting the limits of division even under normal circumstances.

Today, the political atmosphere in Kosofe remains tense following the just-concluded APC primaries for the House of Representatives.

While the process leading to these primaries promoted and expanded deep grassroots mobilization across wards, LCDA structures, and community groups, it has also exposed divisions among key stakeholders – Mayor Dele Oshinowo (the winner), incumbent Hon. Kafilat Ogbara (KOH), Mayoress Princess Samiat Bolanle Bada, and Kosofe LGA Chairman Hon. Moyo Ogunlewe.

Although Hon. Moyo Ogunlewe has publicly congratulated Mayor Oshinowo, lingering tensions could undermine collective efforts.

The expanded grassroots energy generated during the primaries is a major asset that must now be harnessed collectively rather than wasted in factional rivalry.

For the APC to succeed in delivering the presidency, governorship, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly positions in Kosofe, a united front is non-negotiable.

All aspirants who contested and lost the primaries, particularly Hon. Kafilat Ogbara and others, must be fully integrated into this United Kosofe agenda. Their experience, networks, and supporters are vital to building a winning coalition.

A divided Kosofe weakens its political bargaining power and development prospects. Unity does not erase healthy competition, but it demands that all leaders subordinate personal or group interests to the greater goal of strong performance in future elections.

This is the time for respected leaders such as Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, and other influential stakeholders in Lagos East to intervene decisively. Their involvement can facilitate genuine reconciliation, address grievances, and align all blocs behind a common purpose.

Kosofe has the population and strategic importance to be a major force in Lagos politics. A truly United Kosofe will deliver better electoral outcomes and attract more development attention.
The time to act is now.
