U.S. President Donald Trump has appealed to the Iranian government to refrain from harming eight women reportedly in its custody and facing execution, as Washington signals readiness to open negotiations with Tehran.
Trump made the appeal via his Truth Social handle, where he disclosed that his administration is preparing to engage Iranian authorities in talks.
The president described the situation as urgent and urged restraint from Iranian leaders as discussions loom.
According to him, the safe treatment and potential release of the detained women would set a positive tone for the anticipated diplomatic engagement.
“To the Iranian leaders, who will soon be in negotiations with my representatives: I would greatly appreciate the release of these women. I am sure that they will respect the fact that you did so. Please do them no harm! Would be a great start to our negotiations!!!” Trump wrote.
Meanwhile, the details surrounding the arrest and detention of the women remain unclear.
The eight women are believed to be among those detained during widespread anti-government protests that began in late December 2025 and escalated in January 2026.
The demonstrations, which spread across Tehran and other major cities, were fuelled by economic hardship, political grievances, and calls for greater civil freedoms.
During the protests, demonstrators were seen chanting against government authorities, with some incidents escalating into clashes with security forces.
