Nigerian singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has defended his decision to call the attention of United States President Donald Trump to the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
Davidoโs response on X on Tuesday followed a reaction from a user, @ifedayo_johnson, to his appeal to Trump over concerns surrounding the August 15 election.
The user had questioned Davido over his decision to involve the US president in the Osun election, prompting the singer to defend his right to appeal to Trump on the matter.
Davido explained that Trump is also his president, citing his American citizenship as the reason he could directly address him on issues he considered important.
He wrote, โSo I canโt tweet my president again?โ
The singer was born in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, and holds dual citizenship of the US and Nigeria.
Earlier on Tuesday, Davido appealed to Trump to pay attention to the situation in Osun State ahead of the governorship election, in which his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, is seeking re-election.
He raised concerns about the possibility of tension, violence, intimidation and disruption of the democratic process, urging the US and the international community to closely monitor the election.
Davido also called on relevant authorities to protect voters and ensure that every vote is respected, while appealing for peace, transparency and a free and fair election.
The statement reads, โA CALL FOR ATTENTION TO PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP
โPresident Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election.
โThere are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process. Osun people deserve to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely, peacefully, and without fear.
โI appeal to the United States and the international community to pay close attention to the election and encourage all relevant authorities to ensure that every voter is protected and every vote is respected.
โWe do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election. @realDonaldTrump.โ
