Trouble For Atiku, Obi As Nafiu Bala Says ADC Won’t Field Candidates Above 55 In Elections

The factional leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nafiu Bala, has raised concerns over certain individuals within the party, saying they are causing difficulties and disruption.

Bala made the remarks during an interview with BBC Hausa, where he addressed internal issues and coalition-related developments within the party.

Explaining his concerns about some members, he said, “My main concern now is those folks who come into our party, the ADC, to make things difficult for the party and Nigerians, and to also cause chaos in the country.”

He also spoke on the age profile of some individuals who recently joined the party through coalition arrangements, stating, “Most of them who joined the ADC through coalition are in their 70s, 80s and 90s, and it is time to show them that it is time for the youth to take the lead and rescue the country from collapse.”

On proposed internal reforms, Bala said the party would prioritise younger candidates, adding that those above 55 years would not be allowed to contest under the ADC platform.

He said, “We will give youths a chance, and whoever is above 55 years old will not be allowed to contest under ADC. That is my plan so that we can collectively rescue the country.”

He also referenced a court ruling involving some individuals, noting, “It was the court that ruled against them; it has now dismissed their appeal, fined them ₦2 million, and further directed INEC to remove their names and not in any way listen to them.”

The ADC leader’s remarks were made in the course of addressing internal party matters and coalition participation.

Atiku Abubakar is 79, Peter Obi is 64, and Rabiu Kwankwaso is 69, GISTSMATE MEDIA reports.

Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, claimed that a scheduled meeting with representatives of the ADC did not hold as planned.

Kwankwaso stated that the meeting was expected to include key figures from the ADC leadership, including Nafiu Bala, but that the ADC side did not show up for the engagement.

This comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC. Last Wednesday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced plans to remove the names of Senator David Mark and former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as leaders of the party, citing a pending court dispute over the ADC’s leadership.

INEC also declared that it would suspend recognition of any ADC faction or leadership until the Federal High Court in Abuja delivers a final ruling on the matter.

The decision was detailed in a press statement issued on Wednesday by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

According to INEC, the move follows “preservatory orders” issued by the Court of Appeal in Appeal No. CA/ABJ/145/2026, involving Senator David Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe.

According to the commission, “the names of the current National Working Committee members led by Senator David Mark… would be removed from the INEC portal pursuant to the order of the Court of Appeal to maintain the status quo ante bellum.”

The commission explained that the court had directed all parties to maintain the existing situation before the suit was filed and to refrain from actions that could undermine the ongoing proceedings.

“Parties are hereby directed to maintain the status quo ante bellum and shall refrain from taking any step… capable of foisting a fait accompli on the court,” INEC quoted from the appellate court ruling.

INEC further disclosed that it received conflicting legal communications from parties involved in the dispute, with one faction warning against recognising Nafiu Bala as acting chairman, while another demanded full enforcement of the appellate court’s judgment.

Amid the legal tussle, the commission said it would no longer engage with any faction of the ADC.
