A United States lawmaker, Ted Cruz, has alleged that Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu is spending resources and attention on US lobbyists amid persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
Senator Cruz made this allegation in a statement on Wednesday, saying that instead of responding to American concerns, Nigerian officials waged a public relations campaign against critics.
Recall that following a campaign against Christian genocide in Nigeria, Senator Cruz proposed a “Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act, 2025” that would target government officials facilitating the murder of Christians and implementation of “blasphemy laws” with sanctions.
According to the lawmaker, Nigerian officials have created an environment that facilitated mass violence against Christians and religious minorities by imposing blasphemy and Sharia laws and looking the other way at jihadist atrocities.
“The US government knows the Nigerian officials responsible for these policies; I have been pushing my bill to sanction them, and President Trump has even ordered military action,” he said.
The lawmaker further accused the Nigerian government of being confident in their ability to continue the status quo, expressing satisfaction over President Donald Trump’s response to alleged Christian persecution in the country.
In another development, GISTSMATE MEDIA reported that United States President Donald Trump has commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as his decisive leadership in tackling terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria, particularly attacks targeting Christian communities.
Trump conveyed the praise in a letter dated July 6, 2026, the contents of which were made public on Wednesday in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
In the letter, titled “President Trump lauds President Tinubu’s decisive leadership against terrorists,” the US President applauded Tinubu’s efforts to confront security challenges and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations.
