Three Police Officers Sh0t As Suspect Arrested In Osun NURTW Crisis

The Osun State Police Command has arrested a suspect following a gun duel linked to the ongoing National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) crisis, during which three police officers sustained gunshot injuries.

Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the incident occurred on Monday evening after the command received a distress call reporting that armed hoodlums were shooting indiscriminately in the Oke-Ijetu area of Osogbo.

According to the police, operatives of the Anti-Robbery and Violent Crime Response Unit responded to the scene but came under attack from suspected members of a faction loyal to Wakili Alowonle.

Three officers sustained varying degrees of gunshot wounds during the exchange and are currently receiving treatment.

The police said one suspect, Adedeji Saheed Opeyemi, was arrested at the scene.

Investigators alleged that he confessed to receiving a pump-action gun from an associate identified as “Sibi,” who reportedly acted on the instruction of Alowonle. Police said the suspect is assisting with efforts to apprehend other members of the group who remain at large.

During interrogation, Opeyemi reportedly claimed he attended a meeting after being mobilised by union leaders over a dispute concerning control of a motor park. He alleged that although he was armed, he did not fire his weapon and eventually surrendered it to the police after violence broke out.
