A man identified as Sunday Onome has allegedly confessed to participating in a child trafficking syndicate, telling investigators that he received N3.6 million from two operations, including the alleged sale of his friend’s child for N1.3 million.
Onome, an indigene of Ebonyi State, was arrested alongside his girlfriend and son in Onitsha, Anambra State, by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Special Team on the VCRU during an operation that disrupted the alleged trafficking network.
According to his statement to investigators, Onome previously worked as a private driver but turned to child trafficking after losing his job and struggling to earn a living. He claimed he was introduced to the network through contacts who later became closely associated with him, including his girlfriend.
The suspect admitted that his first assignment involved allegedly taking away the son of one of his close friends, who trusted him. He told investigators that after handing the child over to members of the network, he received N1.3 million, describing it as the largest amount of money he had ever earned at once.
He further alleged that he later participated in another operation involving two children, for which he was paid N2.3 million, bringing his total earnings from the two assignments to N3.6 million.
Onome claimed the syndicate operated mainly through telephone communication, with instructions issued remotely and payments transferred directly into his bank account after each assignment. He alleged that those coordinating the operations rarely met him in person.
The suspect also admitted that his girlfriend allegedly assisted in coordinating communications with other members of the network, while his son helped transport children to designated locations before they were handed over to other suspects.
According to his confession, the operation that led to their arrest involved two children whom he transported to Onitsha. He said he checked into a hotel with the children while waiting for those expected to receive them, adding that money was sent to him for accommodation and feeding expenses.
Before the planned handover could take place, police operatives tracked the children’s movement and arrested Onome, his girlfriend and his son, bringing the alleged operation to an end.
Police said the suspect’s confession is forming part of an ongoing investigation aimed at identifying other members of the alleged trafficking syndicate and establishing the full extent of its activities. Authorities also said every claim made in the confession would be thoroughly verified as investigations continue.
The case has again highlighted the dangers of child trafficking and how trusted relationships can allegedly be exploited by criminal networks to target vulnerable children.
