Super El Nino: How Parents Can Protect Their Children Amid Extreme Heat

This Super El Nino is already pushing temperatures above 40ยฐC in many states. Children are most at risk because their bodies heat up faster and they don’t always say when they are dehydrated.

Here is what parents should do now:
1. Water First, Always
– Don’t wait for child to say “I’m thirsty”. Give small sips of water every 30-45 mins.

– For babies under 6 months, continue exclusive breastfeeding more frequently. No need for extra water unless your doctor says so.

– Avoid very cold, sugary drinks like Coke, energy drinks, or excessive juice, they increase dehydration.

2. Dress and Home
– Light, loose cotton clothes. No dark uniforms or wrappers inside house.

– Close curtains between 11am – 4pm to block sun. Open windows at night for cross ventilation.

– Bath children twice with lukewarm (not ice cold) water to cool body. Wipe neck, armpit, groin with damp towel.

– If you have fan/AC, don’t point directly at child for long. Keep room ventilated.

3. Food and Time Outdoors
– No playing or hawking under sun between 12pm – 4pm. This is peak heat period for heat stroke.

– If child must go to school, give wide-brim hat/face cap, water bottle, and pack fruits like watermelon, cucumber, oranges.

– Give light meals – rice with veggies, fruits, not heavy oily foods in afternoon.

4. Know The Warning Signs
Take child to clinic quickly if you see:
– No urine for 6+ hours, very yellow urine

– Dry lips/tongue, sunken eyes, crying without tears
– Continuous headache, vomiting, dizziness, confusion
– Body very hot but NOT sweating
– Convulsion or fainting

These can be signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, this needs urgent care.

5. For Schools and Creches
– Pack extra water, not just one bottle
– Tell teacher to allow water breaks, not to keep children on assembly ground under sun
– If child has asthma, sickle cell, or other chronic illness, heat worsens it โ€” speak to your healthcare provider about a heat plan.

6. What NOT To Do
– Don’t leave child alone in parked car or keke โ€” even for 2 minutes.
– Don’t cover baby’s face or body with thick wrapper to “protect from sun” โ€” it traps heat.
– Don’t give paracetamol to “cool” body without doctor advice.

The heat wave will come and go for months. Small habits โ€” water, shade, timing are what save lives.

If your child is not eating, vomiting after heat exposure, or you are worried, please speak to a healthcare professional at your PHC or general hospital promptly.
