The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on the Hausa and Fulani communities to bridge their differences and strengthen their longstanding bonds for national peace and unity.
The Sultan urged the two groups not to allow mistrust to weaken their relationship, but to close ranks and promote peaceful coexistence and national development.
Abubakar made the call in Sokoto while serving as the royal father of the day at the 12th edition of the World Hausa Day celebration organised by the Sokoto State chapter of the Hausa/Fulani Youth Development and Orientation Forum (HAFYDOF).
Represented by the Wazirin Sokoto, Professor Sambo Wali Junaid, the Sultan said the celebration was a significant opportunity for the two communities, which share longstanding cultural and religious ties, to strengthen their relationship.
He traced their shared history to the era of Sheikh Usmanu bn Fodiyo, who, he said, fostered a united social foundation that encouraged religious, commercial and marital relationships between the Hausa and Fulani.
“We have to come together for the peace and unity of the country,” he stressed.
In his opening remarks, the Sa’in Kilgori, Dr Muhammad Jabbi Kilgori, said the Hausa and Fulani had enjoyed decades of mutual trust, shared cultural heritage and traditions that should not be allowed to erode.
Kilgori said the commemoration of World Hausa Day provided an opportunity to promote the relevance of the Hausa language while strengthening its cultural ties with the Fulani community.
“We have to collectively avoid insinuations and negative propaganda that separated us but use the long-existing trust to build a peaceful and united nation for development,” he said.
The District Head of Kilgori said the Hausa and Fulani had historically lived harmoniously and intermarried without barriers.
“Not until now are we experiencing the other side of our mutual trust,” he lamented, adding that forums such as the celebration would help rebuild trust and strengthen the shared heritage and values that bind the two communities together.
