Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore has expressed deep pain and criticism following United States President Donald Trumpâs public praise of Nigeriaâs First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, during the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC, on February 5.
Trump, addressing attendees including members of the US Congress, religious leaders, and international dignitaries, described the Nigerian First Lady as a âvery respected person,â while highlighting her role in Nigeriaâs Christian community and her pastoral contributions.
âWeâre honoured to be joined today by the First Lady of Nigeria, who also happens to serve as a Christian pastor at the largest church in Nigeria. A very respected woman. First Lady, please, where are you? Thank you very much. Itâs a great honour. Thank you very much. Very respected person, too. Thank you,â Trump said, drawing applause from the audience.
Reacting to the praise, Sowore condemned the move, calling it âexactly the kind of shameless hypocrisy that defines global American politics today.â
He accused Trump of using religion as a tool for propaganda and influence rather than genuine faith.
âTrump has no faith in anything but the power of money. He weaponizes religion when it helps him, then auctions the same faith to the highest bidder,â Sowore said.
He further criticized the US President for selectively celebrating VIPs when political or financial advantage is at stake.
