Gunshots rocked parts of Ondo Central Senatorial District in Ondo State on Monday during the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primaries after suspected political thugs invaded some voting centres.
The violence reportedly occurred at Ward 5, Okelisa, Amudipe Street in Akure, the Ondo State capital, where supporters of Senator Adeniyi Adegbomire came under attack.
Adegbomire, who is seeking the APC senatorial ticket, narrowly escaped after gunmen allegedly opened fire on his vehicle during the exercise.
The attackers reportedly shot sporadically into the air and targeted the senator’s vehicle before security operatives hurriedly whisked him away from the scene.
The incident caused panic in the area as journalists covering the primaries, traders and pupils of Ebenezer Primary School nearby fled for safety.
Eyewitnesses said the hoodlums also wielded machetes, attacked voters and disrupted the counting process at the ward.
Speaking after the incident, Adegbomire described the exercise as a “charade,” alleging that the process was deliberately sabotaged because he was leading in the contest.
“It’s a complete charade. I went to my ward today for the APC Senate primaries and they started counting supporters. Mine was in the middle, Taiwo Fasoranti’s own was by the right and Adu’s own was by the left,” he said.
According to him, violence broke out when it became obvious that he was gaining more support at the polling centre.
“When it became glaring that I was leading, thugs invaded the place, shot into the air and shot at my car. I can show you the bullet mark,” he alleged.
“They started trying to machete people and beating people up. They disrupted the entire process.”
Adegbomire further claimed that reports from other wards across the senatorial district showed similar intimidation tactics allegedly targeted at his supporters.
“They are not allowing my supporters to even get onto the field. They are saying if you are not going to vote for Fasoranti, go back to your house. They have hired thugs to intimidate people,” he added.
The APC senatorial primary in Ondo Central is part of the ongoing party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
