Relief As MTN Restores Xtratime Service

MTN Nigeria has restored its XtraTime service, bringing relief to millions of subscribers who rely on the airtime advance feature during emergencies and periods of low balance.

Recall that the service, which allows eligible customers to borrow airtime and repay on their next recharge, was temporarily suspended following a new compliance requirement introduced by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).

The company announced the suspension in a notice signed by its Company Secretary, Uto Ukpanah.

“MTN Nigeria Communications PLC hereby notifies the Nigerian Exchange Limited and the investing public that the company has temporarily suspended its airtime and data credit advance service (‘XtraTime’),” the notice read.

However, MTN has now confirmed the restoration of the service through a text message sent to subscribers, informing them that they can once again access airtime loans.

The message reads: “Good news! Airtime loan is back! Access up to N1,295 loan when you dial *303# and stay connected.”

In another development, GISTSMATE MEDIA reports that MTN Nigeria Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, has said mobile data in Nigeria ranks among the four cheapest in the world, dismissing complaints that telecom operators charge excessive rates for internet services.

The MTN boss made the assertion during the MTN Data Trial conference held in Lagos, amid growing concerns from subscribers over the cost of data and airtime following recent tariff increases.

Telecom operators have faced criticism from consumers who argue that the cost of mobile data has become increasingly expensive. However, Toriola maintained that Nigeria remains one of the most affordable countries globally for mobile data services.

“Influencers and critics, look at the price at which we sell bundles of data. Then now take that price, go and check in Kenya, go and check in Congo, go and check across the world, and tell me if you are not going to tell me that data in Nigeria is one of the four cheapest in the world. Ghana is also very cheap, I acknowledge that,” he said during the MTN Data Trial conference held in Lagos. READ MORE
