Lere Olayinka, senior special assistant on public communications to Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), says Atiku Abubakar’s persistent quest to become Nigeria’s president suggests it was prescribed to him like medication.
Speaking on Thursday during his appearance on Sunrise Daily, a programme on Channels Television, Olayinka accused the former vice-president of destabilising the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the years in pursuit of his personal ambition.
“The only thing that matters to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is to become president of Nigeria,” the media aide said.
“I begin to wonder — was the presidency prescribed to him by a doctor, such that if he doesn’t get it, something will happen to him? Because that’s exactly how he behaves.”
Olayinka said Atiku’s political history shows a pattern of abandoning parties whenever his presidential bid fails.
“In 2007, while serving as vice-president under the PDP, he left the party to form the Action Congress and contested its presidential ticket,” he said.
“In 2014, he led the rebellion that contributed to PDP’s fall from power. When he didn’t get the APC ticket, he insulted the PDP with unprintable words. But by 2017, he came back. It’s all there on Google.
“In 2003, it was Atiku who frustrated PDP’s effort to win Lagos. Years later, in 2018, he went back to Lagos and apologised for what he did in 2003. That tells you everything.
“Atiku claimed he supported M.K.O. Abiola in the run-off, but the votes didn’t show it. Abiola had 3,617 votes in the first round. Atiku had 2,066. In the run-off, Abiola’s vote only rose to 2,683. So where did Atiku’s votes go?”
He described the former vice-president as a politician who jumps ship whenever it suits his ambition.
“Any time he doesn’t get the ticket, he moves to another party,” he said.
“Even this current coalition he’s part of — I call it a coalition of confusion. After it fails, he will still return to the PDP. That has been his pattern.”
On Wednesday, Atiku, a founding member of the PDP, resigned from the party, adding that the party has strayed from its founding ideals.
