Nigerians performing the lesser Hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, have been urged to avoid abusive language, curses and harsh criticism of the country’s leadership while offering prayers during the holy month of Ramadan.
Yusuf Dingyadi, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the appeal in a statement released to journalists in Sokoto on Sunday.
Dingyadi, who is currently in Saudi Arabia performing the Ramadan lesser Hajj alongside Muslims from different parts of the world, expressed concern over viral videos showing some Nigerians praying against the country and openly insulting political leaders around the Holy Ka’abah.
He described the development as disturbing and inappropriate, noting that the sacred environment demands reverence, discipline and the fear of God.
“You cannot pray against Nigeria and claim to be a good citizen,” he said. “The Holy Land is meant for sacrifice, repentance and prayers for peace, unity and progress, not a place for abusing leaders or cursing the nation.”
According to him, praying against the country and its leaders could worsen the challenges facing Nigeria, including insecurity and political instability.
He therefore urged Nigerian pilgrims to focus their prayers on seeking divine intervention for the nation, especially as Muslims observe the spiritually significant last ten days of Ramadan.
Dingyadi also called on leaders across the country to avoid becoming a burden to the people and instead demonstrate commitment towards addressing insecurity, poverty and injustice confronting citizens.
